Ant Problem or Infestation?

Introduction to Ants

Ants are highly organised social insects, which form colonies that range in size from a few dozen to millions.  Ants are distinct in appearance with their divisions of their body (Head, Thorax and Abdomen) and joint in their antennae. In the UK they range from 3mm to 5mm in length.

There is a range of different species of Ants, but the most common species in the UK that is likely to invade your house is the black garden Ant, which are technically dark brown in colour. This is likely to be the foraging worker ants that are in search of food. They are attracted to sweet food sources which they take back to the nest to feed to the larvae and their queen.

Flying ants are the reproductive males and females. These winged mating ants have a nuptial swarming flight which only occurs for a few days in July and/or August. Following the flight, the female then seeks out a site to nest where she will stay throughout the winter, laying her eggs in the spring ready to start up a new colony.

Why Control Ants?

Though ants aren’t known to carry diseases, they do travel large areas over many different surfaces so are considered unhygienic and cause a risk of contamination.

Different species of ants require different insecticides and bait to remove them successfully - something a trained professional can support you with

How to get rid of Ants?

Do It Yourself -  The first thing you should do is to find the entrance to the nest. The best way to do this is by watching or tracing back the movement of the ants from the food source to the nest. Then you will need to seal off any points of access that Ants are using to enter your house and clean up any potential food sources or sticky surfaces the ants could be attracted to. Finally look to seal off any other food stores.

You can also try some Ant Killer spray or traps from local hardware stores or supermarkets. The different species required different treatments, and need to be correctly placed to ensure they work which is not always possible depending on where the Ants are nesting. These products also do not guarantee complete removal.

Professional Treatment - If the above is not working, or you need a quick resolution, then please do contact a Professional Pest Controller with a full NPTA membership to support, like Pest Off. They will have the training, professional products and knowledge to successfully remove the infestation.
